"What should I do?" - Accelerating Heat Electrification by Providing Customer Choice
10 April 2025
BEAMA today launches a new paper, ‘What Should I Do?’, making a strong case for the inclusion of a broader range of heat electrification technologies across all Government direct and indirect incentive programmes. Such a move will not only allow the UK to address the 20% of homes deemed not suitable for heat pumps, but also plug an up to 6GW storage capacity gap in the lead up to 2030.
BEAMA has already outlined to the DESNZ & Miatta Fahnbulleh's team that by following the BEAMA recommendations we can allow customers to benefit from:
- Immediate energy bill savings through greater storage efficiency
- Longer term flexibility and time of use tariff benefits that can only be truly realised through storage-based technology
The challenge for Government is clear:
- Identify ‘the good’ with respect to heat electrification and do it now to prevent mis-selling and make a move away from the ‘wild west’ of technology claims
- Advocate and endorse independent advice - ideally at the local level - to match customers’ needs
- Move faster with electricity price and reduced rate VAT reform, but ensure this is inclusive of all ‘the good’ heat technologies which can be recognised within MCS and the SAP/Home Energy Model Product Characteristic Database
- Ensure we do not leave behind those in fuel poverty due to old and outdated technologies when there are compelling and immediate benefits to be gained from modern equivalents
BEAMA CEO Yselkla Farmer believes the political message is straightforward in the run up to the launch of the Warm Homes Plan; offer customers viable and sustainable choice, and help them to answer the question “What should I do?”.
