Electrification of heat
13 October 2021
Introduction
For over half a century the UK has been reliant principally on natural gas to heat its homes and buildings. However, the greenhouse gas emissions associated with heating these buildings (excluding Industry) were responsible for 20% of the UK’s emissions in 2019.1
The Government’s Ten-Point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution2 and Clean Growth Strategy3 highlight that it is increasingly evident that using natural gas or other fossil-fuels for heating buildings must be phased out as the UK aims to achieve its legally binding climate change commitments.
